In today's Gospel reading, we note an interesting response of the apostles to Jesus after His teaching about His upcoming suffering and death: "But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him" (Mk 9: 32).
Reflecting on this reading caused me to wonder how often I have a similar response to Jesus' teachings
and to what He specifically communicates to me. How often do I not understand but fail to ask for clarification? I believe, at times, that I'm embarrassed to ask, feeling that I should know the answer. At times, I may be concerned how my questioning will appear to others. Then too, there are the times when I hesitate to ask because I'm afraid of the demands the answer may place on me. These seem to be somewhat similar responses among those in discernment. Most of us experience times when God's call is unclear and we are unsure of the way to go. All too often, we fail to ask God for clarity regarding the call. We may be tempted to try to "figure it out" on our own. We may be caught in the web of concern of what others will think. We may be just plain frightened of what God will ask of us. Somehow, I don't think God wants us to remain ignorant or confused about His call. He often reminds us to ask, knock, seek. Being the generous and loving God that He is, He will certainly give His answers in abundance! |
